HOLLISTER, Mo.–The opioid epidemic has created new concerns for employers.
A substance abuse workshop was held at Hollister High School. Its purpose was to teach local business leaders how to recognize signs of drug use among its staff members.
Some of those signs might include excessive absences, tardiness, and ongoing injuries.
Businesses were encouraged to create a “reasonable suspicion” training plan long before they need it. They say it’s easier if everyone knows there’s a policy in place.
“We don’t like to come to you and say hey you are definitely high or drunk, we like to come to them and say hey look, there’s a suspicion of this going on and we’re pretty sure there’s nothing going on but we’re going to take these processes to protect you and us,” said Mike Tucker of Arrowhead Building Supply.
Missouri onsite testing also encouraged the business leaders to never call out an employee in a large group setting.
